What if you were contagious?
What if you were “infecting” someone every day? What if you were “infecting” someone right now?
I’d say we better WATCH OUT!
It turns out that it’s not a matter of IF YOU WERE CONTAGIOUS, all of us are, in fact, contagious enough to start an EPIDEMIC!
According to social scientists Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler staying healthy and happy is directly associated with staying close to other healthy and happy people. Also, there seems to be very solid data to support that GOOD or BAD behavior pass from friend to friend (read the full article here).
Considering that were are not only contagious, but also are infected by others, puts into perspective how important our peer-group (our “TRIBE”) actually is. Hence, it makes us realize how critical it is to surround ourselves with positive, healthy, happy, supportive and encouraging people.
In Nicholas Christakis’s book, ‘Connected‘, he introduces the “three degrees of influence rule”, which states that everything we do or say tends to ripple through our network, having an impact on our friends (one degree), our friends’ friends (two degrees), and our friends’ friends’ friends (three degrees). He also points out that, to most of us, threes degrees means more than 1,000 thousand people.
What if we made an effort to spread GOOD VIRUSES as oppose to BAD ones? We could, potentially, start a “positive epidemic” and infect around 1,000 people.
1 infecting 1,000? How about 1,000 infecting 1,000,000 and so on…
That’s food for thought!
