I got worried. Very worried. Why?
Let me tell you.
I thought I’d never get stuck. Getting unstuck is kind of my thing. I’ve always manage to get around road blocks and find solutions to problems. That is just part of my nature. Part of my ‘Brazilianess’. So I believed.
However, in the first semester of 2013, I found myself massively stuck and I could not figure out why. Everything seemed to be going as planned. I was writing my book (still am, by the way), starting a new business with two guys I’d be grateful to have as mentors (that is because they are both awesome), meeting incredible change makers and studying with some of Australia’s top entrepreneurs. It goes without saying that I was also enjoying my family, specially, my baby daughter – Bianca.
Life should have been perfect right? Well, not quite.
Things were not moving forward. Stuckness. Stuckness. Stuckness.
I felt like an impostor because I could not do to myself one of the things I do best – get people unstuck and into flow. It felt like loosing my authenticity, my passion and what defines me as a professional. A bit too much, I know. But I got say, it was not a pleasant experience. What was even worse was the fact people that used to admire my work begun doubting my capabilities. A terrible feeling for someone who loved what he does.
Now, let me tell you what happened last Monday morning.
I woke up at 2:30 AM and in a blink of an eye, that massive invisible barrier evaporated. I ended up staying awake until about 3:50 AM because I felt an urge to write.
Later on the day, I had a chat with Cultural Animator George Siosi (awesome guy, btw). He helped me consciously understand the reasons why I was feeling so stuck. It was quite simple, indeed. It had to do with the 4 seasons of the year.
To cut the story short. My partner and I did what we needed to do before the end of 2012 (spring). However, we didn’t follow through at summer (early 2013) and ended up going back to spring. As a consequence, we experienced an extended reflection time, followed by a long hibernation. Pretty boring and confusing times, I must say.
As weird as this may sound, understanding this has literally opened up a whole new avenue of possibilities and shifted my perception massively. It also added the ‘missing link’ in my upcoming book as well as another powerful tool to my Coaching toolbox.
But the biggest lesson learned was understanding how partnerships work and the certainty that no one can achieve success on their own. Furthermore, I now know what to say YES or NO to. It’s quite a liberating feeling.
So, you may ask: “why should I care about all this?”
Let me explain.
What happened to me it is quite normal. The sad reality is that many go through their adult/work lives without ever getting unstuck. Instead of facing the issue and asking for help, they choose to stay STUCK and eventually loose the drive to pursue their dreams. Furthermore, many who have decided to follow their passion often have the illusion they can make it on their own. I call this behaviour “the Super Hero fallacy”.
If not in Flow, we are either stuck, overwhelmed or frustrated. That is if we are not meditating, sleeping or watching TV, of course.
Feeling stuck is slow death. Like floating around as a lost soul… Nowhere to go. No drive. No passion.
Time for a RE-BIRTH
I am going through my own reinvention. Equipped with a new set of tools and trusting the right kind of partnerships is unfolding. I am purposely choosing to work ONLY if I am having fun. Another take-a-way from times of stuckness. Work that seems too hard, it is work we should not do. Work that is easy, yet stimulating, is work that produces the best results for you and your client. No FUN, no Deal.
I came up with a formula to use when filtering what I should be involved with or not. It goes like this:
FUN + EXCITEMENT + CAPABILITY = VALUE CREATION
VALUE CREATION = WEALTH CREATION
As a result, I am re-launching my Coaching practice (something I should never, ever have stopped) because that is where I can add most value (most fun + excitement + capability). See some of my ex-clients testimonials here.
So, how are you feeling?
If you feel somewhat frustrated, stuck or overwhelmed, this time of the year usually favours change by design, that is change you can initiate. It’s particularly a good time to exercise our creative capacity. It is also normal, around this time of the year, to have tons of ideas, but to be unsure where or how to start.
My piece of advise, if you are NOT feeling the FLOW, reach out for help!
Don’t risk loosing a whole new year.
