Rudy is one of my favorite movies of all times.
I watched it for the first time many years ago when I was feeling low.
Rudy is based on the true and very inspirational story of Daniel “Rudy” Ruettige.
Rudy is now a sought after motivation speaker and, as he often speaks to kids, his message is very simple – “GET RID OF YOUR GOOFY THOUGHTS”.
I do believe everyone has “Goofy Thoughts”, as he puts it.
I don’t know about you, but I had countless “Goofy Thoughts” about many things in my life.
As a non-native English speaker and migrant, I know I have de-valued myself in the past because of “Goofy Thoughts”.
“Is my English good enough? But, I have an accent, will Australians want to listen to what I have to say? Will I get the same opportunities?”- blah blah blah.
I know these “Goofy Thoughts” came from a time when I was struggling to learn the language and to set myself up.
I also know there are betters stories I can tell myself. Something like this:
Because I am a non-native English speaker and migrant, I was given the opportunity to learn a lot more and work harder than most people in this country ever will.
Because the work I do is heavily dependent on English ability, I study harder than most people ever will. I make sure I know what I teach well (many trainers don’t) so I can add real value to my clients.
Because I am a non-native English speaker and migrant, I have to love what I do in order to do it better and put in the hours necessary to become great at it.
The most valuable lessons I learned were only possible because I am a non-native English speaker living in an English speaking country.
I have developed an unique set of skills and capability as a result of all the challenges and struggles life as a migrant imposes.
I am thankful for everything I have learned”.
To get rid of “Goofy Thoughts”, we often need to revise the stories we tell ourselves.
I deal with skilled migrants and overseas students on a regular basis who have their heads cluttered with “Goofy Thoughts”. They feel disempowered and, in many cases, hopeless. As a result, anger and frustration build up.
“Goofy Thoughts” will rob your energy, motivation and, most importantly, your BELIEF.
Nothing great is ever achieved without BELIEF.
You can’t feel empowerment when “Goofy Thoughts” clutter your best thinking.
Get rid of them!
If you haven’t watched Rudy, do it. It will lift your spirit.
